A dash of old, a pinch of new, a hefty helping of something never heard before, Mayday RED is a rare musical experience: a fluid fusion of indie-euro-pop-rock and experimental electronica swirled around an earthy, organic, at times even folksy center. Equally at home with a lush wall of sound or a raw acoustic track, Mayday RED glides from driving and anthemic, to otherworldly and ethereal, to familiar and sublime.
Perhaps even more than Mayday RED’s exploration of uniquely compelling sonic textures, what sets this duo apart from any act past or present is the skillfully crafted shared female/male vocal (a rarity outside of the folk or country genres). Like coffee and caramel, the superbly blended voices of Mayday RED are each others’ ideal complement and a perfect crowning to an extraordinary sound.
Word lovers will find in Mayday RED a lyrical odyssey: at one moment epic poetry and the next intensely intimate. Nuanced and layered, yet highly personal and accessible, Mayday RED covers a wide thematic spread: courage and self-sacrifice, faith and hope in a dark world, the challenge of saving decaying relationships, the crucible of grief.
The duo first came together in December 2011 when Jeremy Hoop (a 17 year veteran working actor/musician/singer-songwriter) asked Rachel Koller (a singer-songwriter who had just previously released her debut solo album “Step Outside”) to share the lead vocal with him on “How Did We Get Here” a song Hoop had written as the driver behind a Facebook fundraiser to help a friend with breast-cancer–100% of the revenues of the downloads of the song would go to defray the cost of treatment. Not only was the financial response overwhelming, but so too was praise for the duet. Six months later, Rachel and Jeremy formed Mayday RED, focusing on producing music mostly for online distribution and promotion through Youtube.
In June of 2013, Mayday RED made the Final Four of the Stadium of Fire nationwide music competition where over 1000 musical acts competed to win a chance to open for Kelly Clarkson and Carly Rae Jepsen in front of 65,000 people.
In late 2014, Mayday RED turned it’s attention from Youtube cover songs to work on original material, and in November of 2015, released their debut album “Let it Burn”. In December of 2015, they released a Christmas single, “The First Noel”. In 2016, they have plans to produce a number of classic covers offering a Mayday RED twist on the Beatles, U2, Peter Gabriel, Tom Petty, Fleetwood Mac, and others, as well as a Christmas album (due for release in late November 2016).
